What is a class 4 MOT?
If you drive a vehicle over three years old, it is important to make sure it is kept in a safe and roadworthy condition. An MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. There are different types of MOT test classes, with the best option depending on the vehicle in question.
A Class 4 MOT test is the most common class for MOTs and is often referred to as a standard MOT. They are suitable for:
- Cars that can carry up to 8 passengers
- Private hire and public service vehicles that can carry up to 8 passengers
- Taxis
- Ambulances
- Small vans and motor caravans
This applies to vehicles up to the Class 4 MOT weight limit of 3,000 kg.
MOT tests can only be carried out by trained and experienced specialists at centres authorised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
How long does a Class 4 MOT take?
What checks are included in the Class 4 MOT test?
- Tyres & Wheels - Tyre size, type, tread depth and security are checked to ensure all tyres are in good and legal condition.
- Brakes - The overall condition, operation and performance of your brakes, pedals and levers will be inspected, as well as your ABS (if you have one),
- Horn - Your horn will be checked to ensure it works properly and is suitable for your vehicle.
- Exhaust System - Your exhaust system will be checked for any serious leaks, loud noises, or missing diesel particulate filters (where fitted) and that it's secure and complete.
- Mirrors - The MOT will ensure you have at least the minimum number of mirrors, and that they are all secure and in good condition.
- Doors - Doors will be inspected for secure latches, hinges and catches, and that your front and rear doors open correctly.
- Exhaust Emissions - The emissions test will check your emissions meet the legal limit for the age and fuel type of your vehicle.
- Towbar - Your towbar will be checked to ensure it's secure, in good condition and has no unsuitable modifications or repairs.
- Boot, Tailgate & Bonnet - Your test will check that the boot, tailgate and bonnet can be shut securely.
- Seats - All seats will be inspected to check they are securely fitted and the driver's seat can be adjusted.
- Vehicle Structure - Your test will check the overall condition of your vehicle is roadworthy, essentially confirming there is no excessive damage or sharp edges that could cause injury.
- Fuel System - Your fuel system will be checked for potential leaks. The test will also ensure that your hoses and pipes are in good condition and that your fuel cap seals securely.
- Seat belt SRS - This test will check all mandatory seatbelts are in place and that they comply with the legal requirement for them to be suitable, functional, in good condition and securely attached.
- Steering & Suspension - Your steering and suspension system will be checked for its overall condition and functionality. The test will ensure you have an appropriate steering oil level and a functional steering lock mechanism and that no unsuitable modifications or repairs have been made.
- Windscreen wipers & Washers - Wipers and washers will be checked to ensure they work properly and do not inhibit the driver's view of the road.
- Windscreen - This test will ensure the driver has a clear and unobstructed view of the road.
- Electrical - Electrical inspections will check your car battery and any visible wiring.
- Lights - All lights and bulbs will be inspected for their condition, operation and security.
- Registration Plate - Your Class 4 MOT will ensure your registration plate is clear, easily legible and securely attached."
