What are brake pads and discs?

Brake pads and discs are part of a vehicle's braking system. Brake pads squeeze against the brake discs when the brake pedal is pressed, which causes friction and results in a vehicle slowing down. Well maintained car brake pads and discs help you slow down quickly and safely.

Drum brake systems are commonly used on the rear wheels of vehicles. When the brake pedal is pressed, drum brakes operate by causing two shoes to press outwards against the drum, creating friction that slows down the vehicle.

How often do brake discs and pads need to be changed?

Brake pads are made to last thousands of miles, but eventually they will start to wear and will need replacing. Depending on the type of driving you do, on average, brake pads should be replaced between 25,000-65,000 miles. Brake discs generally last longer than brake pads, however, regular checks should help ensure your car brakes remain in a good condition.

Cost of Replacing Brake Pads and Discs

The cost of replacing brake pads and discs can vary depending on several factors, including the type of vehicle, the quality of the replacement parts, and the labor costs of the mechanic. On average, the cost of replacing brake pads can range from £50 to £200, while the cost of replacing brake discs can range from £100 to £500. If you’re replacing both brake pads and discs, the total cost can range from £200 to £700.

As mentioned above the cost to replace brake pads and discs in our packages includes labour so there are no hidden charges.

Should You Replace Brake Pads and Discs Together?

When it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s braking system, it’s generally recommended to replace brake pads and discs together, especially if the brake discs are excessively worn. Worn-out brake discs can cause the new brake pads to wear out faster, leading to premature replacement. Additionally, replacing both brake pads and discs at the same time can ensure optimal brake performance and safety.

However, if the brake discs are still in good condition, it may not be necessary to replace them along with the brake pads. If you are unsure if both your brake pad and brake disc need to be replaced it may be worth booking a brake inspection, our technicians will then be able to advise on whether you need new brake pads and discs or just a brake pad change.
