Why do car batteries fail?

Responsible for 60,000 roadside recovery call-outs a year, battery failure is a common cause of breakdown in petrol and diesel powered vehicles. There are a number of reasons why a car battery could fail, including extreme weather conditions, the car being left for long periods, the age of the battery and, commonly, motorists accidentally leaving their lights on.

How long should a car battery last?

The average lifespan of a car battery is between 3 and 5 years, but this can vary based on a number of factors. These include how often and how long the car is driven, temperature variation, the age of your car and any additional electronic features installed (including alarms and sensors) that are active even when your car is not in use.

How can I tell when my car battery is dying and I need a replacement?

There are a number of signs to look out for when your car’s battery needs replacing:

If the battery is flat, it will have trouble starting the car's engine; sometimes this is accompanied by a clicking noise from the starter motor. You might find that the electric components in your car aren't working as well as they should be - problems with the lights, radio, air conditioning and even wipers could be attributed to a failing battery.

If the battery has become over-charged you might notice a smell similar to rotting eggs. That is the smell of the acid in your battery boiling over because it cannot cope with the amount of power it is creating. If this happens to your car battery it is recommended that you have it checked immediately to ensure that the sulphuric acid in the battery does not pose a risk to yourself or your car’s internal components.

Find out if it’s time get your car’s battery replaced with our guide to signs of battery failure.

Which car battery do I need?

When buying a new car battery it's important to make sure you're getting exactly the right type of battery for your car. Buying a cheap car battery with a lower capacity rating than recommended for your vehicle can result in poor performance and, if you end up with a battery from the wrong group size, it might not match up to your car's terminal locations.

You can use our battery finder tool at the top of the page to make sure you get exactly the right replacement battery for your car.

What is the difference between a car battery and a leisure battery?

A car battery is found in all vehicles including vans, trucks and domestic vehicles. It stores energy created when the engine is running and perhaps most importantly is used to start the engine.

A leisure battery is used in caravans to provide power to electrical amenities such as the lighting, television and radio. The leisure battery isn’t used to start the engine and is kept in an entirely different part of the vehicle.

Car and leisure batteries are not the same type of battery so can’t be used interchangeably so if you’re about to set off on a caravan holiday make sure you check both batteries in advance.

How to change a car battery

We recommend visiting one of our ATS centres to get your replacement car battery fitted. One of our experts will be able to change your car battery quickly and safety.

Replacing a battery in a car will restore any inbuilt electronics to their default settings, including navigation systems, clocks and radios. You'll need to reset these once your new car battery has been fitted. If you have your car battery fitted at ATS, one of our technicians will be able to help you with this.

How to test a car battery

While signs of battery failure may indicate you need to replace the battery in your car, you can also test the charge in your car battery with a multimeter. Testing a battery can give you a good idea of its condition before symptoms of failure begin to show.

If you don't have a multimeter to test a car battery or are unsure how to test it safely, you can book a free vehicle inspection at your local ATS Euromaster which includes a free battery check. We can help you find and fit a new car battery.

How to start a car with a dead battery
